Legendary typographer and designer Erik Spiekermann was recenetly announced as the winner of the German Design Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Here is a short (14min) interview with the man himself.
Offering brief insights into a variety of aspects influencing Spiekerman’s work from the similarities between music and typeface design, the process and influences in his work, advice on becoming a better designer and surprisingly political views on the role good and bad communication plays in the state. What’s really refreshing about Spiekermann’s approach though is his honesty to the whole process, surrounding himself with talented individuals who’s specialities surpass his own abilities in that area whilst clearly acknowledging the best work is the product of successful teams and, only in the rare cases, of one sole individual.
